5 Tips for Window Shopping

The truth about window installations

The window industry is often surrounded by a significant amount of hype, leading to widespread misconceptions among consumers. Our aim is to dispel these myths and misunderstandings, so you make the best choice, ensuring you select a window that is tailored to your specific needs. If you find yourself uncertain on how to evaluate windows from various suppliers or what to consider as essential features, the following advice will be helpful.

1. Pay attention to the NFRC label.

Count on the NFRC label when you are window shopping — it’s the most important thing you can use when comparison shopping. Why? Because major window manufacturers submit their product information for their windows to the National Fenestration Rating Council, a non-biased window rating organization, and they rate each window based on these four factors:

  • U-Factor
  • Solar Heat Gain Coefficient
  • Visible Transmittance
  • Air Leakage

2. More expensive doesn’t necessarily mean better.

Paying a higher price for a window doesn’t necessarily equate to a better product. In reality, the majority of windows are made using the same materials, processes, and quality standards in the same manufacturing facility. There are currently outstanding windows available that are substantially cheaper than their competitors but offer nearly identical performance!

The pricing of windows is determined by the vendor, and in the Miami-Dade and Broward County areas, you often find windows at nearby competitors selling for hundreds of dollars more than our windows. At The Window Source of Miami, we believe that ensuring fair and reasonable prices for our windows is key to satisfying our customers, who are more likely to recommend us to their friends and neighbors as a result.

3. Not everyone needs triple-pane windows.

You may find it unexpected, but “better” doesn’t always equate to being more suitable for your specific needs. For instance, while triple-pane windows are renowned for their superior insulation and noise reduction compared to double-pane windows, they may not be the most appropriate choice for everyone.

Not everyone requires enhanced insulation or noise reduction, and the additional expense can sometimes exceed the benefits gained. Triple-pane windows are particularly beneficial for those residing in the Northern Climate Zones, but may not be well-suited for our hot, humid climate in Southeastern Miami.

4. Be aware of (and avoid) high-pressure sales tactics.

Whether you’re considering a car purchase or planning a home renovation, it’s crucial to be vigilant about aggressive sales strategies. Although not as prevalent as they were in the 80’s and 90’s, these tactics still exist. They often consist of a narrative designed to compel you to commit on the spot. A typical scenario might be, “We’ve just secured a deal to supply a large condominium complex with 350 windows. If I include your order with theirs today, you’ll benefit from a significant discount due to the bulk purchase.”

Despite the excuses you might hear, the key is to make a purchase decision when you feel entirely at ease and confident in the provider.

5. You deserve a quality installation.

Many individuals are unaware of how crucial the window installation procedure is in addition to the window product. You risk losing warmth and cooling near a window’s frame if gaps aren’t adequately sealed, and the window isn’t placed correctly. To achieve a perfect fit, we exclusively employ skilled craftspeople who use low expansion spray foam to cover any gaps between the frame and the wall.
